Panmunjom or Panmunjeom, is the former village just north of the de facto border between North and South Korea where in 1953 the Korean Armistice Agreement that paused the Korean War was signed. The building where the armistice was signed still stands, and Panmunjom is often used as a metonym for the nearby Joint Security Area (JSA), where discussions between North and South Korea still take place in blue buildings that straddle the Military Demarcation Line. It is one of the last vestiges of the Cold War, but Trump used the place to make theatre when on June 30th he met Kim Jong-un and walked 20 unhurried deliberate steps, to enter the books of history as the first acting US president who walked on North Korean territory.
