US domestic politics have played a significant role in causing an almost schizophrenic approach to the crisis that puts much value on defensive deterrence. Yet no defense is impenetrable forever. Timidity morphed into American ambivalence. Ultimately, American power, not timidity, is what can keep the Middle East from imploding.
