Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya, “Islamic Resistance Movement”: this is the full meaning of the acronym Hamas which as a single word translates as “Zeal” or “Ardor”. Its origins are in the Muslim Brotherhood, the fundamentalist party born in 1928 in Egypt, and from there spread throughout the Sunni world.
